PilatesThe Pilates method is a philosophy of movement, experienced through the performance of over 500 exercises created by Joseph Pilates. He designed unique equipment using the resistance of springs to exercise the whole body. Pilates’ equipment includes the reformer, Wunda chair, Cadillac, spinal corrector, ladder barrel, and now the springboard, mini ball, and ring. Pilates is more than a series of exercises, it increases people’s strength, flexibility, alignment, awareness, overall health, and performance of your daily life. It also builds endurance, corrects muscular imbalances, and allows the body to heal from injuries. Imbalances of the posture, joints, and muscles can cause discomfort in many areas. The Pilates method uses a specific series of movements to correct these imbalances. Pilates gets your mind in tune with your body creating overall body awareness. By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and complete concentration on smooth, flowing movement, you’ll become acutely aware of how your body feels, where it is in space, and how to control its movement. 1 to 1 personal trainers have been educated in the Pilates method through the Midwest Pilates Institute located in Madison Pilates. The education has focused on the main principles of Pilates which includes: control, coordination of the whole body, centering, concentration, precision, balanced muscle development, rhythm of movement, and breath. Through these principles all the exercises can be learned and individual goals can be reached. All Pilates’ sessions consist of one hour on any or all pieces of equipment. Individual programs are designed per student needs. The exercises in the individual program are used as building blocks working towards a comprehensive program containing all the exercises in the Pilates method.
